As you have heard from the messages sent by Dr. Martin, the Yadkin County Schools will be operating under the Plan B model. The Yadkin Early College is no exception. We too will be conducting classes divided into 2 cohorts, A and B. There will be some differences with how this works at the Early College due to most of our students also being in classes with Surry Community College. For our high school classes, our students will be divided along the alphabetical groupings based on last names beginning with the letters A-K in Cohort A and L-Z in Cohort B. Cohort A will meet in person on Mondays and Tuesdays while Cohort B will meet on Thursdays and Fridays. All students will have remote instruction for their high school classes on Wednesdays and the other days their cohort is not scheduled to meet in person. There are some exceptions where students may not be assigned to their cohort based on their last name in order to assist with class sizes and to work with their college schedules. These students have been notified of the change in their cohort assignment. With regard to college classes taught by Surry Community College, students will not be separated into cohorts for college classes. For freshmen, the college has set up their required courses to match their cohort days. The other grade levels will follow the schedules set by Surry Community College for their courses. The college is offering courses in a variety of formats. Students can check their My Knight Life account in order to see their schedules. The college is still working to adjust schedules in some cases so keep an eye on them as they may change. For Early College students who registered for the Yadkin Virtual Academy and have college courses, Surry Community College has been informed and they are looking to offer these courses online. As before, these students can check their My Knight Life account to see the status of their college courses.
Now I want to share with you some important dates regarding the start of school. This year we are planning to host open house sessions on Thursday, August 13 and Friday, August 14. We will be sending out further information about dates and times for different groups of students and parents. We are also working to schedule a separate orientation for our incoming freshmen. We will notify the incoming freshmen and their parents very soon on the exact date and times for this. Both the open house and orientation will be conducted in small groups. During these sessions we will review the safety protocols that we have in place for this year, we will have college textbooks available for pick up, Chromebooks will be available for pick up as well, and parents will be able to pay their instructional and Chromebook rental fees. Another important date to keep in mind is Monday, August 17. This will be the first day of classes for students in cohort A and for students enrolled in college classes. Surry Community College classes begin that day and therefore we must start as well. This has been a time of continuous adjustments to meet the guidelines we have been given. One thing that has not changed is the fact that we look forward to seeing our students again and will do our best to provide for their educational needs and safety. Please continue to check our website and social media pages for additional information in the upcoming days.
